Why Mantle

Most accountants aren't licensed CPAs. Here's why that matters.

It surprises most owners to learn that fewer than 1 in 5 people doing accounting work in the U.S. are actually licensed CPAs. The rest are bookkeepers, accounting clerks, finance associates, or self-taught practitioners — capable people, often, but operating without the license, the training, or the accountability standard.

And when your work is done by a non-licensed practitioner, the IRS sees it. A CPA's signature on a return carries weight that a bookkeeper's doesn't.

At Mantle, your work is done personally by a licensed CPA — not handed off to a junior, an offshore team, or a bookkeeper with a CPA loosely supervising. The same Big 4–trained CPA who sets up your books is the one working in them every month.

What makes Mantle different from other small CPA firms?

Three things. First, every client gets a licensed CPA doing the work — not a bookkeeper with a CPA stamp at the top. Second, we built the firm around the corporate-America CFO playbook — forward-looking strategy on top of numbers done right, not just compliance and a return in April. Third, we price flat and tell you the number up front. No hourly meter, no surprise invoices, no calls you avoid because they'll cost you $200.

Underneath all of it: Mantle is Big 4 experienced. We trained at firms serving the largest companies in the country — and we know which numbers actually matter, the processes that produce them, and the systems that hold up as a business scales. That's the muscle we bring to every engagement, whether you're a $500K business or a $50M one.

Do you have an office where we can meet in person?

Yes. Our office is located in Charlotte's Wesley Heights neighborhood at 1213 W. Morehead St., 5th Floor, Charlotte, NC 28208, and in-person meetings are available there by appointment. We're also glad to come to you — whether that's your place of business or a coffee shop down the street — or to meet by phone or video, whatever's easiest for you.
Packages & Pricing

Which package is right for me — and how do we decide?

The scoping process is collaborative. We sit down together, look at where your business actually is, and walk through all five packages and any custom options. We'll make a recommendation based on what we see — your size, your complexity, your goals, what's working and what isn't.

But the package you select is the package we service. We don't take a recommendation as an opening bid and push you up from there. If you tell us The Books is what fits your business right now, that's what we deliver — at the price we quoted, with the same care we'd give any client.

As your business grows or changes, we re-scope together. The whole point is that Mantle moves with you, not ahead of you.

Why bundle books and taxes together?

Because the best tax opportunities show up in real time — and you only see them if the same firm is doing both.

When we're in your books every month, we see the major purchases coming — like equipment that qualifies for Section 179 or bonus depreciation if it's placed in service before December 31.

Bundling books and taxes at one firm isn't about saving you a packet of paperwork. It's about being in a position to identify and act on tax-saving moves while they're still on the table.

What if I don't fit neatly into one of the five packages?

Then we build you a custom one. The five packages cover what most businesses need, but yours might need a little more of one thing and none of another. We'll scope it to you.

Am I locked into a contract?

Cancel anytime with a 30 day notice so we can prepare a clean handover.

What if I already have a tax preparer I like?

Absolutely fine. We can run any package without the tax piece and adjust the fee. Plenty of clients keep a preparer they trust and use us for everything else.
Services & Scope

I'm behind on my books. Can you still help?

Yes. Catch-up bookkeeping is one of the most common ways clients start with us — whether you're a few months or a few years behind. We get you current and tax-ready, then keep you there. The faster you stop guessing, the faster the business starts answering you.

What about my personal taxes and family financial picture?

Your business and your family money are connected — how you're paid, what goes into retirement, when family members go on payroll, how wealth comes out of the business. We offer Owner & Family Tax Strategy as a discrete engagement that looks at the full picture and shows you the moves that quietly save thousands every year.

Personal returns are also available for existing business clients — coordinated alongside the business so nothing falls through the cracks.

What's included in The CFO package vs. The Controller?

The Controller handles your financial operations — books, payroll, AP, AR, cash flow visibility — and transforms the back office so it scales with the business. It's about getting operations off your plate and running cleanly.

The CFO is something different entirely. In corporate America, the most highly regarded function inside the finance organization is FP&A — Financial Planning & Analysis. It's the team building forward-looking forecasts, modeling decisions before they're made, producing a whole different set of financial statements that the standard P&L doesn't show you: profitability by job, by customer, by segment, by location. It's the work that tells leadership where to spend, where to invest, where to cut.

That's what we run at the CFO level. Detailed forward-looking metrics. Scenario modeling for the hire, the loan, the new location. Annual budgeting with variance analysis every month. The big calls get made with a licensed CPA in the room — and with the kind of financial visibility that businesses your size almost never have.

Do you handle payroll?

Yes. Payroll is included starting at The Controller package, and available as an add-on at every other tier. We run it, file the taxes, handle the W-2s and 1099s, and reconcile it into the books — no separate payroll service to manage, no calls to a help desk in another state.

What accounting software do you use?

We work in QuickBooks Online and Xero, and with whatever you're already running. We only recommend switching systems when the one you've got is genuinely holding you back — which is rare.
Onboarding & Working Together

What does onboarding actually look like?

The first 60 days are intentionally hands-on. For clients in our region, we like to meet in person within the first month — sit down at your office or ours, look at the business together, get to know how things actually run. For clients outside driving distance, we do that same meeting over video, and visit when the relationship and geography make it worthwhile.

From there, expect several calls in months 1 and 2 — getting accounts connected, building out your workflow, walking through how we'll communicate, and making sure your books and operations are streamlined the way you want them. After the setup runway, things quiet down to the monthly rhythm of your package.

We invest the time upfront on purpose. The relationships we build in those first weeks are what makes the years after run smoothly.

I already have someone doing this. Is switching a hassle?

No — we handle the transition so you don't have to. We coordinate getting your history and access moved over, pick up where things left off, and clean up anything that needs it along the way. Most owners are surprised how little is actually asked of them. You keep running the business; we handle the handoff.

How often will I actually hear from you?

Every month, at minimum — your numbers land in your inbox, explained in plain English, not dumped on you to decode. Beyond that it depends on your package: a sit-down every quarter at the entry level, every month as you move up, and as-needed access at the CFO level.

And you're never charged by the hour for a phone call. If something comes up, you reach out.

What if I have a question that's not strictly "accounting"?

Ask anyway. Pricing a job, evaluating a vendor contract, thinking through whether to hire — the financial side of those decisions is exactly what we're here for, and it's included in your monthly fee. If it's outside our scope, we'll tell you and point you to someone who handles it. No clock running.

Can I upgrade or downgrade my package later?

Yes, any time. As your business grows or your needs change, we re-scope and adjust. No penalty, no friction. The whole point is that Mantle scales with you — start where you are, move up when you need to.
