Why Mantle
What makes Mantle different from other small CPA firms?
We set out to build a different kind of firm — modern, forward-looking, and led by a new generation of CPAs who partner with you all year rather than surface once at tax time. Three things make that real.
First, a licensed CPA owns your account and stands behind your numbers — not a bookkeeper with a CPA reviewing loosely at the end.
Second, we run the corporate-America CFO playbook on a modern, technology-driven stack: forward-looking strategy built on numbers done right — where your business is headed, not just what happened last April. For us, compliance is the floor, not the finish line.
Third, we keep pricing simple and flat, told to you up front. No hourly meter, no surprise invoices, no calls you put off because they'll cost you $200.
Underneath all of it, Mantle is Big 4 experienced. We trained at firms serving the largest companies in the country — so we know which numbers actually matter, the processes that produce them, and the systems that hold up as a business scales. That's the muscle we bring to every engagement, whether you're a 200k business or a 10M one.
And beyond the credentials, the relationship is real. Call or text anytime — no formal emails, no waiting days for a scheduled slot just to reach us. When something comes up, you get an actual person who knows your business. We take clients to lunch, grab coffee, share a beer at the brewery — because a real partnership isn't a portal and a quarterly check-in. It's a relationship, and we treat it like one.

Most accountants aren't licensed CPAs. Here's why that matters.
It surprises most owners to learn that fewer than 1 in 5 people doing accounting work in the U.S. are actually licensed CPAs. The rest are bookkeepers, accounting clerks, finance associates, or self-taught practitioners — capable people, often, but operating without the license, the training, or the accountability standard.
The difference shows up most when something goes sideways with the IRS. A notice, an audit, a dispute — that's when you want a licensed CPA with real, hands-on IRS experience in your corner. Only a CPA (or an enrolled agent or attorney) can actually represent you before the IRS; a non-credentialed preparer can't step in at all. And experience is what turns that credential into an outcome: a CPA who has worked through IRS audits knows how the agency thinks, what it looks for, and how to defend your position. That experience pays real dividends exactly when the stakes are highest.
It pays off when you go for financing, too. Above a certain size, lenders require financial statements prepared to a professional standard — often a CPA compilation, review, or audit specifically. Those are assurance services only a licensed CPA can issue. We've repeatedly seen owners reach the closing table only to find their bookkeeper's statements don't meet the standard the bank requires — forcing a frantic, last-minute switch to a CPA under deadline. With a CPA in your books all along, what the lender asks for is already there, done right.

Why does Big Four experience matter for my business?
Sean and Erin built their careers at Big Four accounting firms, with experience at Deloitte, PwC, and KPMG. These firms are among the largest and most respected in the profession, serving major public companies, private businesses, and complex organizations. That environment trained them to work through difficult issues, manage demanding engagements, and connect accounting, tax, operations, risk, and strategy.
Our firm’s Managing Partner, Sean, spent his entire nine-year professional career before founding Mantle at Big Four accounting firms, predominantly at Deloitte, where he rose to the rank of Manager. In that role, he led global teams, managed complex engagements, and worked directly with senior client leadership.
That experience is part of what Mantle brings to small and middle-market businesses. We pair the technical depth, judgment, and service standards developed at the Big Four with the direct, hands-on relationship that is not widely available to businesses on Main Street. You work with experienced CPAs who know your business, stay involved throughout the year, and help connect the numbers to the decisions ahead.
Mantle Advisory Group is an independent firm. References to Deloitte, PwC, and KPMG reflect prior professional experience only and do not imply affiliation with or endorsement by those firms.

Services
I have an immediate business, tax, or accounting need. Can Mantle help?
Absolutely. Many clients first come to Mantle with a pressing need—a cleanup, tax matter, financing request, transaction, or another time-sensitive project.
Our recommendation is simple: let us handle the immediate need and show you the value of working with us. Once it is resolved, we can discuss whether one of our ongoing service packages would be useful to you and your business going forward.

I’m interested in an ongoing relationship with Mantle. How do we decide which service level is right for my business?
We start with a conversation, not a sales pitch. There are three levels: The Accountant for year-round books and tax support, The Modern Back Office for more hands-on financial operations, and The CFO for deeper planning, profitability analysis, and decision support.
We look at the size and complexity of your business, where you are headed, and what support would be most valuable right now. The Modern Back Office is our most popular package, but for some businesses The Accountant is the better fit—and the cost savings may matter more at that stage.
We will talk through the options with you and recommend the level that feels right for the business today.

Does Mantle prepare individual tax returns?
Yes. We prepare individual returns, particularly when they are connected to a business owner’s broader tax situation. We also work with investors, real estate owners and professionals, executives, and others whose returns involve planning considerations, retirement contributions, multiple income streams, or ownership interests.
If your return is more straightforward, we still recommend reaching out. After a quick review, we can either help directly or introduce you to one of our trusted accountants at another firm.

I'm behind on my books, or things are a mess. Can you still help?
Absolutely — it's one of the most common ways clients come to us. Before the ongoing partnership begins, we do a one-time cleanup and systems rebuild: catch you up, get the books clean and accurate, and move you onto a modern, automated stack. We scope that cleanup up front so there are no surprises, and once your books are solid, the ongoing work starts on a clean foundation.
What does the CFO level add beyond the Modern Back Office?
The Modern Back Office runs your finances day to day — books, payroll, AP/AR, cash flow, compliance. The CFO level adds the forward-looking layer on top: job- and segment-level profitability (which work actually makes money), scenario modeling before big decisions, budgets tracked against actuals, and real strategy. It's the corporate FP&A function, sized for your business.
Do you run the whole back office — payroll, AP/AR, sales tax?
Yes. At The Modern Back Office and above, we take the entire operation off your plate: payroll and filings, accounts payable and receivable, sales tax, and compliance — all on a modern, automated stack.
Onboarding & Working Together
Do you have an office where we can meet in person?
Yes. Our office is in Charlotte's Wesley Heights neighborhood — 1213 W. Morehead St., 5th Floor, Charlotte, NC 28208 — with in-person meetings available there by appointment.
While the Charlotte area is our home, we serve clients across the Carolinas, and we come to you. We're regularly in Charleston, Greenville, Raleigh-Durham, and the Winston-Salem area meeting with clients — and when we're in your region, we'll reach out to connect in person, usually over a lunch or coffee. But when something pressing comes up, we're glad to travel to you on short notice to talk it through face to face.

What does onboarding look like — and is switching a hassle?
In the first 30–60 days, we handle the transition from your current provider — data, records, and any cleanup — set up your systems, and build the workflows, while you keep running the business. We typically like to meet in person during this stretch to go through everything together — walk your numbers, share the early items we're already seeing, and plan the moves worth making next. It's a hands-on start, so from there everything just runs.
Am I locked into a contract?
We structure every engagement around what works best for your business. Depending on your needs, that may mean monthly, quarterly, or semiannual billing—or a one-time project.
Most importantly, you can walk away easily. If you decide you no longer want to continue, simply let us know before your next payment is due. You will not be charged for the next cycle, there are no penalties, and we will not make the process difficult. No hoops, no pressure, and no chasing you down.
